Historical records of Meng Huo described him as a Han Chinese, but in Luo Guanzhong's Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel he was despicted as a barbarian southern tribal leader. He was also given a fictitious wife in the novel, called Lady Zhurong. She was claimed to be the Goddess of Fire.
