Huang Gai was a loyal combat veteran who served three members of the Sun family - Sun Jian, Sun Ce and Sun Quan. Sun Jian had worked under Yuan Shu and after his death, his old troops were sent back to Yuan Shu's camp. Huang Gai, however, did not return with them to Yuan Shu and instead stayed with Sun Ce. They went through rough times, but eventually they were both able to free themselves from Yuan Shu and Sun Ce established himself in the South.
